How Does NUCCA Work?

Body Balance

NUCCA is a relatively unknown health secret that restores the proper head and neck alignment, therefore improving body balance. Body balance is vital. The brain spends 90% of its activity balancing the body against gravity. When the body is off balance it begins to effect the other 10% of the brain's activity, which controls all the other body functions such as breathing, digestion, or thinking.

The human head is designed to rest perfectly balanced on top of the spine, which is similar to balancing a bowling ball on a broomstick! This alignment allows the brain to better communicate with each part of the body. Trillions of nerves pass through this critical area that send and receive messages that regulate and maintain all body functions. This area of the nervous system controls automatic functions of the body such as breathing, blood pressure, sleep and posture (body balance). When the head and neck are not in perfect alignment, this impedes the flow of health and healing messages from the brain to the body. The part of the body that does not receive the proper health and healing messages from the brain will start to suffer and develop pain or symptoms over time. One can’t feel this brainstem pressure as there are no pain sensory fibers inside one's central nervous system.

When a person endures an accident or trauma that shifts the top neck bone, the atlas or C1, from its ideal position, the rest of the spine compensates and also shifts out of place like a stack of dominoes. The pelvic muscles will contract more on one side pulling the hip up and making the leg appear short. This muscle imbalance may also pull one of the shoulders down. This body imbalance sets the stage for injury and damage to the tissues and joints. The biomechanical imbalance and neurological interference will remain until the upper cervical aspect of the spinal misalignment is corrected.

Correcting Body Imbalance

All patients go through a thorough history, computer exam (sEMG and thermography) and postural exam (supine leg check). Once it is determined that the body is out of alignment (balance), precise x-rays of the head and neck are taken. The doctor analyzes the films and determines which one of over 10,000 potential correction angles the patient will need to restore body balance. The precise and gentle NUCCA adjustment can then be administered to reactivate the body’s natural healing ability. There is no popping, twisting, or cracking of the spine with this adjustment. Once the correction is made the doctor will check the improvement in posture and take post x-rays to see that a correction is being made. Once it is determined that the angle used is ideal, no more films are needed unless the patient has a new trauma.

After the First Adjustment

All healing in the body is self-healing and it takes time. It takes time for the body to heal a broken bone, a cut on a finger, or a spine that is out of alignment.

Some spines will correct to a normal position with one adjustment and stabilize for a long period of time. More commonly, people will need a series of adjustments before their bodies will hold the correction for days, weeks, months, or years at a time. The spine can mis-align again because of the weakness that is now there. Physical, emotional, or chemical challenges to the body can cause one to go back out of alignment. Our goal is to adjust the spine as few times as possible since recovery continues as long as the correction holds. Click here to view a list of strategies on how to maintain your adjustment.
